This product is easy to install for those who are handy- good with a saw and/or dremel. If one does not feel comfortable with cutting and measuring – not a project that should be attempted. Product will bend and deform when cut with shears, but tile nips would work. Dremel is great for smoothing edges after cuts. Adhesive is very strong. If you misplace a tile, it will pull the drywall off when you try to remove and reset the piece. SO be very careful when placing your tile. It took about 6 hours to complete a 16 foot backsplash with 4 outlets to cut around. Highly important to draw a straight level line on the wall to make sure pieces are level! This could be a disaster if the tiles were not level and ran either up or downward across the backsplash. Just take your time! Measure twice to be certain, cut once to be exact and gently place the tile against the wall for placement. Tile will grip slightly, but can still be adjusted. Caution – As soon as you press the tile to the wall, it will not be adjustable. Again, it was not hard, just needed to be careful and cautious. IT LOOKS GREAT!!! We receive MANY MANY compliments from friends and family about this backsplash. VERY STYLISH! Favors modern or contemporary designs. Cleanup is easy! NO GROUT!!! – GET THE KIT – it has trim pieces for a professional looking finished edge! And it is easier for us to just buy metal outlet covers than attempt to use the sheets to cover existing outlet covers,

Prepare the Walls for Tile A tile backsplash in the kitchen may be applied over clean, level drywall since sinks are not considered wet areas, like showers, that require backer board. Before you begin, watch our video: What’s Inside My Wall? Step 1 Turn off power to the kitchen, and remove outlet covers and switchplates in the area to be tiled. Tape off outlets, cabinets and the area where your countertops meet the walls. Move freestanding appliances away from the walls. Step 2 Using a level, attach a ledgerboard — a sturdy piece of lumber attached for support. In this case, we are using a straight 1×4 board screwed to the wall studs where you want the bottom edge of the backsplash will be. A ledgerboard temporarily supports tiles until the adhesive cures, keeping them level where there is no countertop. Step 3 Clean walls with a mixture of trisodium phosphate (TSP) and water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Sand or degloss glossy surfaces. Step 4 Check the flatness and condition of the wall. Fill dents, dips and ripples more than 1/16 inch deep with joint compound. Let dry, sand smooth and prime.

One of the great benefits of kitchen backsplash tile—apart from the utilitarian aspect of protecting your kitchen’s walls from food spatter—is that it can add a ton of visual appeal, variety and color to your kitchen design. In many contemporary homes, cabinet designs feature simple, clean lines and monochrome colors—so the kitchen tile backsplash is often a great place to experiment with bold designs, patterns and colors.

Mosaic tile is another classic kitchen backsplash design, especially for those looking to add some visual interest to their kitchen. Often made of glass or stone, these small tiles adhere to a mesh backing and appear in a diverse pattern. The mesh backing negates the need for the placement of individual tiles and grouting, which makes mosaics a popular choice among DIY-ers looking for a simple-to-install but attractive choice.

Plan the Tile Layout Tile backsplashes need a 1/8-inch expansion gap around the perimeter where the tile meets the cabinets and countertops. Step 1 Find the center of the wall that best suits your tile selection and mark a vertical line. Some tile patterns work best when centered on a focal point, such as the faucet or stove. Step 2 Dry-lay tiles horizontally on the countertop along the wall using spacers to check the ends. If cut tiles will be too narrow, adjust the layout to allow you to cut wider pieces at both sides. Step 3 Check the vertical layout. Cut tiles are best hidden under cabinets, but you may have to cut from the bottom if your countertop isn’t level. First, use a level to find the lowest point of the countertop. Hold a tile at this spot, accounting for a 1/8-inch expansion gap. Mark the wall at the top of the tile. Then, use a level to extend the line along the work area. This line serves as your cutting guide to fit tile along the counter. To see where the tile will end at the top of the installation, make a jury stick: Mark a straight board using the tiles and spacers for the vertical layout. Hold it up to the wall to check. If you have tiny slivers of tile at the top, adjust the layout down and redraw your reference line.
