Think small – Don’t just consider the larger items when planning storage, but remember the minutiae of small packets and bottles and how the insides of your cupboards and drawers are organised. Here, pull-out shelves in a pantry mean you can always see what’s hiding at the back. Many problems we associate with chaotic kitchen storage come down to the wasteland that is the backs of cupboards, or overstuffed drawers not being accessible enough or easy to clean. Planning a pantry? 9 questions to ask.

19. Cart Rescue: Small in stature but bold in color, the IKEA bar cart is the hero of the kitchen. Tuck it in the pantry for extra storage, use it as a mini island or set it up as a coffee bar — this little guy does it all. (via Hampton SC)

6. Wall of Drawers: If space is limited in your house, you must get creative with storage. These wooden IKEA CD drawers came in sets of two, so the homeowners bought 30, then whitewashed them and created a wall of drawers in their pantry. (via Design*Sponge)

As I was painting in our studio one night, I was staring at the wall of bookcases and it hit me—why not use a Billy bookcase or two in our pantry? I literally ran to grab the tape measurer and with trembling hands checked the spacing. It would fit! Hooray. A quick google search showed me that others have used the Billy in pantries before with great success, so I was super excited to get started. So we grabbed an 15” and a 31” Billy at our last Ikea trip.

Here is a wall of tall cabinets just packed with storage in a New York loft. The pantry cabinet on the left has swing-out shelves that allow easier access to food than would deep, stationary shelving. The real stars of this vertical storage, however, are the very narrow pullout cabinets, used here for oils and herbs and located right next to the cooktop where they will be used.

1. Marble Island: No, that isn’t contact paper. But buying a tiny piece of marble sure is cheaper than redoing the whole kitchen. Or, if you want to save a little dough, just paint the IKEA Beckvam kitchen cart a deep gray and add pretty gold hardware for a sophisticated little island you’ll love forever. (via Oliver and Rust)

Since every kitchen is customizable, the exact price is going to vary. However, IKEA has provided a few examples — shown in the slideshow — of 10’x10′ kitchen setups to give us a ballpark price. The prices shown include cabinets, fronts, drawers, interior shelving, hinges, toe kicks, legs, and cover panels. (Countertops, sinks, faucets, knobs and handles, appliances and lighting are sold separately.)

13. Kitchen Sink: Don’t know about you, but sometimes that area under the sink makes us cringe. Organize that pile of cleaning supplies, garbage bags and other miscellaneous things with the IKEA Knuff magazine files. (via Apartment Apothecary)

Tall cabinets – Just as base cabinets are ergonomically superior with less shelving and more drawers, so are tall cabinets, which are generally used for pantries. There are a million and one pull-out pantries on the market and they all provide one simple thing that shelving doesn’t, and that is easy access. The drawers in pull-out pantries bring the contents to you, which makes for a more organised cabinet, higher levels of comfort, and exceptional workflow.

14. Double Up: Two is better than one in the case of this kitchen. Complete with a charging station, bulk jars and baskets for trays, the extra space is invaluable. (via Cozy Cottage Cute)
